Happy Mother’s Day, Mom
My mom is a stalwart.
Not much phases her.
She has a sense of humour, a hide as thick as a rhino’s, and a way of seeing only the best in her kids, grandkids and everyone and everything else too.
When our dad — her husband — died, she stepped up.
No fuss.
No drama.
Just carried on holding things together.
When I moved back home, she did the same — stepped up.
Making sure I’m fed.
That there are clean clothes.
That the house runs.
All while I build this business called SISU.
She says exactly what’s on her mind.
Sometimes it’s hilarious.
Sometimes… less so.
But it’s always honest.
And always her.
She used to be the announcer at our local horse shows.
One day she proudly told everyone I was her daughter…
and then I rode the wrong course and got eliminated.
Over the microphone she said,
“And I send you to school for this???”
That’s my mom. No filter. All love.
She loves the odd hug.
A word of affirmation.
A cup of coffee she didn’t have to make herself.
She lets me colour her hair crazy colours just to see how it looks.
She loves animals — especially the strays.
Everyone is welcome.
Two legs or four.
She’s quiet and a little introverted…
until we’re at a party.
Then she’s on the dancefloor, making bad jokes — or good ones —
and somehow becoming the life and soul of it all.
People often tell me how much they love her.
How sprightly she is.
How with it she still is.
She’s my rock.
My anchor.
My treasure.
I don’t say it enough.
And I probably don’t recognise her efforts nearly enough either.
But this Mother’s Day,
I want her to know just how much she means to me.
Happy Mother’s Day, Mom.
