About a year and a half ago, we decided Hops needed a friend.
Now, Hops is a wonderful dog. He's huge, full of enthusiasm, loves my mom more than life itself... and let's just say he's not always the sharpest tool in the shed.
So, we adopted Emme from the SPCA.
She's a pointer cross, about half Hops' size, twice as fast and, as we soon discovered, permanently on high alert.
The dogs love spending winter evenings with us. They each have their favourite spot, and on this particular evening Emme was fast asleep. Suddenly she shot up, pointed towards the kitchen, then lay back down again.
I didn't think much of it.
A few moments later she did exactly the same thing.
This time I went to investigate.
What I found was one of those moments where your brain struggles to catch up with what your eyes are seeing. A pot of oil had caught alight and there was a wall of flame being sucked up into the extraction fan.
Thankfully, we managed to put it out before it became something far worse. We lost a pot, an extraction fan, a couple of cupboards and, yes... a few blankets sacrificed to smother the flames.
It could have been so much worse.
Had Emme not insisted I pay attention, I don't even want to think about what might have happened.
So these days Emme pretty much gets away with anything. Well... almost anything.
Stealing my mom's socks is still strictly forbidden.
As for Hops?
He slept through the entire drama.
Go, girl dogs. ❤️🐾
