Donkeys have been companions to humans for thousands of years, carrying loads, ploughing fields, and offering quiet, steadfast companionship. Yet they rarely get the recognition they deserve. World Donkey Day is a chance to change that — to celebrate their resilience, their gentle nature, and their incredible contribution to communities around the world.
Why do we love donkeys at SISU? 🫏
It started with a horse called Razz. When he came to live at home with us, he needed a companion and what better friend than a rescued donkey from the SPCA?
Enter Mario Tigerfudge. Eighteen months old, full of vim and vinegar, completely fearless, and convinced that every gate, bucket, flower pot, pocket, and open door existed purely for his investigation. Curiosity doesn't only get cats into trouble.
About six months later the SPCA asked if there was space for one more little broken soul. That's when Geronimo Tigerfudge wandered into our lives. Timid, unsure, and happiest glued to Mario's side.
Twenty years later these two little legends supposedly keep the grass short, contribute generously to the fertilising schedule, and still keep me laughing.
So thank you to World Donkey Day for recognising the long ears, the soft noses, the mischief makers, and the gentle souls that leave hoofprints all over your heart.
Did you know? There are over 40 million donkeys in the world, and they are vital to the livelihoods of millions of people in developing countries.
Same same. But better.
